Okay, so let’s talk Mushoku Tensei.

Now, I am only going to share information I’ve seen from the first season of the show and looked up in the Mushoku Tensei Wiki.

Mushoku Tensei is an anime about the reincarnation of a fat, sad nerd in Japan into a baby of a prominent family in the Six-Faced World. Rudeus Greyrat is the son of a noble family who has given up the lavish lifestyle for a simple life in the country. He has inherited his mother’s magical abilities and his father’s skill with the sword. His magical ability is powerful and Rudeus is able to use magic without having to expend energy on incantations. His sword skill requires much more effort to refine.

More than a natural aptitude for the sword, Rudeus inherits his intense libido and penchant for polyamory. Rudeus ends up taking three wives to his name; all of them are significant women who have played major roles in his life.

The first love interest for Rudy we encounter is Roxy, young Rudeus Greyrat’s teacher of magic. She was considered one of the best magic teachers in the land, but soon realized that Rudeus would surpass anything she could teach him. She left after two years of teaching him, but kept in contact for some time by letter. While Rudy was definitely attracted to the mage, there appeared to be nothing more than philia or platonic love on her end.

The second love interest we see for Rudy is Sylphie , a fragile elf girl who is bullied relentlessly at school. Rudeus saved her from her bullies and taught her magic so she could defend herself from enemies. Empowering the young friend led to a great friendship and bond between the two, which soon turned into a mutual affection after Rudeus learned Sylphie was a girl. Their shared dreams of entering a magical academy together were shattered by forced separation, from both Rudeus’ parents and the teleport incident.

The third love interest we find for Rudeus is Eris Greyrat, a distant cousin of the Greyrat family. Rudeus was hired to be Eris’ magic teacher, although she was an extremely challenging and disrespectful student who let her title, brash emotions and exceptional talent as a swordsman impact her behavior. It took Rudeus setting her up to be challenged (and sorely punished) to humble her spirit and allow her to break past her mental barriers and see Rudeus for the gifted mage and generally good person that he was. She grows into a kind and empathetic woman, still hot-headed at times, who eventually lets down her guard enough to fall in love with Rudeus. She takes his virginity and then disappears the next morning. She is personally my favorite love interest as she shows the most growth and change internally in the series in season one.

So, Rudeus is presented with three very different potential wives (and yes, I know he married them all). Each one represents something different for him: Slyphie represents fragility and femininity, she is a woman to be protected, one that empowers him through her direct need for his talents as a man, mage and swordman ; Roxy represents wisdom and yearning, she is the mentor and sought after desire for much of Rudeus’ youth, the unattainable motherly figure that he can only dream of conquering; Eris represents companionship and unity, where Rudeus is magic, she is swordplay, she can both dominate and be dominated by him, she is the woman who can walk alongside Rudeus confidently in any scenario because she has grown up and matured with him.
